#7826: Tips for Attaining Khushuk in Prayer by the Honourable Dato' Seri Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri
Question:
Assalamualaikum Dato’ Seri. What are some tips for attaining khushu' (focus and devotion) in prayer?
Answer:
All praise is due to Allah SWT. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW, his wives, family members, companions, and all those who follow his path until the Day of Judgment.
We begin with the words of Allah SWT:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿١﴾ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
“Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble and fully devoted in their prayers.”
(Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:1–2)
In explaining this verse, Imam Al-Qurtubi stated that khushu' originates in the heart. When a person attains khushu' in prayer, the limbs and body naturally reflect that state because the heart is fully engaged in worship. He also related that some scholars, while performing prayer, would magnify Allah SWT in their hearts and turn their attention away from worldly concerns.
(See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, 12/103)
Imam Al-Shawkani, in his commentary on this verse, mentioned that some scholars considered khushu' to be an action of the heart, encompassing feelings of reverence, fear, and awe before Allah. Others regarded it as an action manifested through the body, such as maintaining calmness in prayer, avoiding unnecessary movements, and refraining from distractions. Linguistically, khushu' conveys meanings such as tranquility, humility, reverence, fear, and a sense of submission before Allah.
(See Fath Al-Qadir, 1/977)
To help achieve khushu' in prayer, we can divide the process into three stages:
Before Prayer – preparing oneself physically, mentally, and spiritually for worship.
As Prayer Approaches – entering a state of readiness and focus before beginning the prayer.
During Prayer – maintaining concentration, understanding, and presence of heart throughout the prayer.
The 23 Key Elements of Khushuk in Prayer
ASK connects every learning module to the 23 Elements of Khushuk.
First: Preparation for Prayer (8 Elements)
Second: As Prayer Approaches (7 Elements)
Third: During Prayer (8 Elements)
One of the most effective ways to attain khushuk in prayer is by understanding and reflecting upon the meanings of the recitations within the prayer itself. Prayer is the moment when a servant stands before his Lord; therefore, every verse and supplication recited should be understood and appreciated, especially since the Qur'an is the very Word of Allah.
We should avoid becoming like the person described in the saying:
“Do not be like a parrot that can repeat words but does not understand their meaning or purpose.”
For this reason, Muslims are highly encouraged to understand the meanings of the Qur'anic verses and supplications recited in prayer, as this deepens reflection, strengthens spiritual connection, and greatly enhances khushuk during worship.

INTERNALIZING THE RECITATION
